Internal investigation starts after suicide in custody

The Swedish prison and probation Service initiates an internal investigation after Friday's suicide in the custody in Växjö. The suicide was discovered when the staff were about to serve breakfast on Friday morning. But the prison and probation Service did not have any special supervision of the man.

– No, all inmates in custody goes through a suicide screening at the registration. It is a form where the inmate answers a number of questions. There were no indicators of an increased risk of suicide, says Mohamad Mehanna, Correctional Services Manager in Växjö and Jönköping to Smålandsposten.

There are few suicides that happens in custodys in Sweden. According to Mohamad Mehanna, there have been three suicides between 2014 and 2017.
