Indicators for the violation of the Stockholm Agreement and a suspicious role for the UN in Yemen

A chronicle by Maha Nasser.

The confidence that had taken time to build between the Yemeni parties in Sweden's consultations, had been shattered. Yemenis were right when they concerned about the failure of Sweden's consultations, and their doubts about the seriousness of the warring parties in stopping the war. The fingers points to the United Nations and accuses it of being dishonest with serious efforts to end the war in Yemen.

The Stockholm agreement was nothing more than ink on paper. Since the signing of the agreement, Al - Houthi Group has committed several violations. They continue bomb civilians in Taiz, embargo the entry of humanitarian aid. In addition, this period witnessed the exchange of accusations between parties about seriousness in peace. The two sides also disagreed on the exchange of prisoners, while Houthi group denied one-third of the names of detainees listed in the legitimate government list. As for the withdrawal from the port of Hodeidah, which is supposed to be handed over to the Coast Guard, which operated the port in 2014. The Houthi group carried out mock procedures to hand over the port. They handed over the port to their forces wearing the Coast Guard uniforms. Local observers have described these actions as a mockery, a mockery of the minds, and a mockery of the United Nations Commission of Observers. This has raised the condemnation of the legitimate Yemeni government, and considered it a clear encroachment on the agreement of Stockholm, and the beginning that does not bode well in good faith by the Houthis. The delegation of legitimacy also lodged a formal protest to the United Nations over the declaration of handing over the port.

On the other hand, the Yemeni people are angry at the United Nations, which is working to trade its issues to reap the money. Because it does not work from the outset credibility to address the situation in Yemen. Since 2011, the United Nations has played a suspicious role that has contributed to the deterioration of the situation in Yemen. All that the United Nations has done is legitimize the militias, and strengthen their presence, and encourage them to move forward with their coup project. It has not exercised any real pressure to implement the Security Council resolutions, most notably resolution 2216. This is to say that the United Nations is a tool in the hands of the major powers, which is working to implement its agenda in Yemen and the countries of the region in general, and this makes them lose credibility and prestige around the world.

That the Stockholm consultations was an attempt to divert attention towards Yemen, and to silence the voices calling for the cessation of the war in Yemen. That was through an imaginary agreement that was difficult to translate into reality. This agreement does not work more than, allow the Houthis to reorganize their papers, catch their breath and restore their activity. This is what has happened. They have rearranged their ranks, gathered up their strength and started new massacres to kill the debtors with confidence. Because they know perfectly well that no one can hold them accountable if there are those who support them and protect their project.

The failure of the international community is a cause of the humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen today. When some of them watched what was happening. While others worked to mobilize and support the war by various means and methods. The Yemenis have lost the hope since long time, for the success of any negotiations. Unless there is a serious pause on the part of the international community and real pressure on the conflicting forces and the forces supporting them.
